Green Gift Guide | Eco-friendly Gifts

December 05, 2019

‘Tis the season. The decorations are up and if the Christmas tunes aren’t playing in your office yet, they’re bound to be in every store you walk through. But as we all know, the festive season shouldn’t be all about consumerism. Which is why it’s important to remember the importance of having a sustainable Christmas.

To help you do this, our friends at Boody are bringing you their Green Gift Guide this year – a range of eco-friendly gifts that will allow you to take part in the advent cheer without compromising your sustainable values. From wooden sunglasses and stainless-steel drinking straws to beeswax wraps and bamboo water bottles, their Green Gift Guide has your Christmas gifting covered.

Read on to see the top 9 ideas:

1. Eco-friendly sunscreen

Eco-friendly sunscreen

The northern hemisphere might be snowing this time of year, but here Down Under we’re sweating! With the sun’s harsh rays in full force, it’s important to remember to layer up in sunscreen. Natural skincare brand Wotnot creates a fantastic Anti-Aging Sunscreen & Primer from organic ingredients that are eco-friendly and free of nasties. The perfect gift for a Christmas in the sun.

2. Organic tea

Organic tea

Whether it’s overindulging on chocolate or drinking one too many sherries, it’s easy to get carried away over the festive season. Organic tea is a thoughtful gift that will give your loved one a much-needed detox and moment of calm in between the busy festive period. The Organic Tea Project works with single estate organic tea plantations in India to bring you only the finest teas such as Organic English Breakfast Tea.

3. Reusable straws

Reusable straws

The days of plastic straws are numbered (finally!). With everything we know about the damage plastic does to our oceans, there really is no excuse for anyone to be using plastic straws anymore. Encourage someone special to go plastic-free by treating them to a pack of Stainless Steel Straws by Ever Eco. Then, make sure they sip all their glasses of mulled wine through them!

4. Reusable flasks

Reusable flasks

It’s not just drinking straws that should be reusable by now. Ensure your loved ones steer clear of plastic drink bottles by gifting them a reusable flask. Made by Fressko knows a thing or two about reusable flasks, as Trip from their original Camino series proves. The sophisticated, hard-wearing bamboo flask with a stainless steel inner makes the perfect gift for those on the go.

5. Reusable food wraps

Reusable food wraps

We all know Boxing Day is all about tasty leftovers. Ensure your loved one can avoid food waste by keeping their leftovers fresh with a reusable food wrap – an environmentally-friendly alternative to plastic. WRAPPA creates gift-ready food wraps made from beeswax or plant-based materials that are as appealing to look at as they are kind to the planet, such as this fun and colourful Organic Cotton Mermaid Magic 3-pack. Eco gift sets made easy.

6. Botanical beard oil

Botanical Beard Oil

One for the guys. Help him keep that beard in shape with the nourishing blend of Botanics found in natural beard oil. Babs Bodycare creates the perfect Beard Oil from a unique blend of Camelia, Argan, Jojoba and Hemp oils, which reduce inflammation, soothe skin and heal irritations while reducing redness and itchiness. He will thank you for it!

7. The Urban Farmer book

The Urban Farmer book

Perfect for that budding urban farmer in the family. Written by horticultural expert Justin Calverley, The Urban Farmer is a guide for anyone who dreams of living the country life in the city by growing their own healthy, sustainable fruit and veg – and more! A great gift for someone green-thumbed to find beneath their Christmas tree. Keep an eye out for our exclusive interview with the author, Justin Calberley, in a couple of days!

8. Wooden sunglasses

Wooden sunglasses

As well as protecting our skin from those beautiful sunbeams, we’ll also want to shield our eyes. A pair of wooden sunglasses make the perfect gift for a loved one. Not only are they unique and awesome to look at, but there’s no nasty plastic meaning they’re better for the environment, too. Bonus! Grown makes sustainable wooden eyewear for him and her such as Bodhi in Redwood and Meraki in Ebony. We love!

9. Bamboo clothing

What you might not know about aerosol sunscreens

November 29, 2019

Have you ever used an aerosol sunscreen? Then please read this.

The need to protect our skin and that of our families’ from the damaging effects of the sun’s UV rays is a way of life for every Australian. And there are so many sunscreen options on the market now to help do this…… lotions, creams, balms and even sticks.

Natural sunscreen lotion

There are also aerosol sunscreens, that are mess-free, don’t leave sticky hands and on the face of it seem very easy to apply.  But they are not easy to apply properly, with much of the product ending up in the air and their potential for misuse outweighs any benefits.

Any product used incorrectly can be damaging to your health and to our environment, but aerosol sunscreens are unique for two reasons:

  • they contain a cocktail of flammable and toxic chemicals if inhaled
  • their design means that they can be so easily misused

NOT TO BE INHALED

“Keep out of reach of children. Avoid inhalation.”

Manufacturers of aerosol sunscreen know that they contain chemicals that are dangerous if inhaled and the packaging clearly states to “avoid inhalation”. While an adult may find this easy to do it is not so easy with babies or  small children. Particularly while they are hopping around on the beach with excitement, or at a park trying to race after their friends or at a friend’s house ready to jump in the pool??

Parents can ask their kids not to breath while the aerosol sunscreen is applied but we questions whether this is realistic. Kids don’t understand long term consequences, never mind babies.

Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, so we teach our kids to wear sunscreen from a very early age and, as they grow a little older, to apply it themselves. No sunscreen should be marketed for kids that contains a warning “Keep out of reach of children. Do not inhale".

We believe that any product intended for use on the body & face, especially that of a child or baby, that is known to be hazardous if inhaled should not be in an aerosol.

FLAMMABLE WARNING

“Extremely Flammable. Protect from sunlight”

Another issue with aerosol sunscreen is that they must be protected from direct sunlight and kept away from naked flames.

“The Food and Drug Administration reported incidents in which people wearing spray sunscreen near a flame suffered significant burns that required medical treatment.”**

HAZARDOUS WASTE

Aerosols can be hazardous to our environment too. Empty, intact aerosol cans can be safely recycled along with other metal packaging. However if the aerosol can isn't completely empty, it is considered hazardous waste.

“SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK, SLID & SKIP”

One of the most successful health campaigns in Australia was launched by a friendly seagull in 1981. Wearing board shorts, t-shirt and a big hat he came alive on our TV screens singing “Slip, Slop, Slap!” . It was simple, easy to remember and kids loved our winged friend.  This slogan has been recently updated to include 2 more guidelines:

“Seek” shade whenever possible especially in the midday heat and

“Slide” on your UV protective sunniness.

We would like another guideline added, “SKIP” aerosol sunscreens.

Slip slop slap seek slide skip

There are so many natural alternatives like Wotnot’s All Natural Baby Sunscreen that can be used from babies as young as 3 months old. These sunscreens protects sensitive skin while being nourishing, clean and natural.

How to avoid the most common toxins found in baby skincare products!

April 06, 2019

Confused about what skincare products to use? There is only one article you really need to read to be in the know and its this one:

It’s commonly known that we should only put the healthiest of foods inside our baby’s bodies. It is also just as important to apply only the healthiest of products on the outside of their bodies. We might not realise this, but everyday baby products–like shampoos, lotions, bath gels, sunscreens, etc contain ingredients that can be extremely harmful. These ingredients have the potential to cause short term or long term health issues. Some of these issues can be apparent immediately on baby’s skin after use. Other times the issues can be invisible, disrupting their bodies in ways that we can’t see right away with the naked eye.

Wotnot Baby Skincare

According to The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) , over the last 30 years there has been a twofold to threefold increase in paediatric atopic dermatitis reported with most children developing atopic dermatitis before the age of two years, and 20 per cent of people develop eczema before the age of five (according to the Eczema Association of Australia).

Alarmingly despite all the studies and news reports, many parents are STILL bathing, powdering, wiping and moisturising their babies with products containing an alarming mix of harmful toxins! Parabens, Talc, Sulphates, Propylene, Glycol and DEA are just some of the known toxic ingredients commonly used in baby bath, skin & hair care products and also in baby wipes and nappy change creams.

Thankfully these days, avoiding toxic ingredients is much easier with lots of safer alternatives on the market. Here, we help shed some light on how it is that toxic ingredients end up in baby care products and more importantly, show you how you can protect your babies by knowing what to avoid and what baby skin care products are safe to use.

In Australia and many countries around the world, the baby skin care industry is grossly unregulated. Brands know busy mums don’t always have time to read all the ingredients. And let’s be real, who really understands what all the ingredients are anyway! According to the FDA (US Food & Drug Administration), with the exception of additives and specifically prohibited ingredients, personal-care product manufacturers can use any ingredients as long as they are properly listed on the product label and the use doesn’t cause the product to be misbranded.

If you think those major household brand names have your back, well, they don’t necessarily. In fact, they’re some of the worst offenders.

Dangerous chemicals such as parabens are commonly used as a preservative because it’s cheap. But it’s also very nasty. Parabens may seem like a good idea as babies generally don’t suffer allergic reactions to it. But do you really want your baby’s delicate skins to be absorbing chemicals that mimic estrogen?

Excessive estrogen is linked to cancer and other medical concerns that can affect their development. That’s just one example of the many shocking ingredients used to make everyday products for both you and your bub.

Baby product manufacturers are allowed to use certain amounts of concerning ingredients in their products. These amounts are deemed by the authorities to be at low enough levels not to cause harm. But this is the amount allowed in each individual product; e.g. each nappy cream, baby shampoo etc. What happens when you go through a tub of nappy cream and baby lotion every couple of weeks?

What happens is that your baby is being exposed to accumulative amounts of certain toxic ingredients. When you think of the number of baby wipes that will be used on the average baby over a 2-year period and the dangerous chemicals that your standard supermarket brand wipes contain, it is pretty frightening.

Due to their tiny body size, babies and especially newborns, are much more susceptible to the harmful effects of toxins than we are. In a pound for pound ratio, babies consume more food, more air, and more water than that of an adult. Babies also absorb things at a much higher rate than adults. The top layer of a baby’s skin is 30% thinner than an adult’s and more permeable and their internal organs are still developing. Therefore, accumulative exposure (aka bioaccumulation) of bad toxic ingredients poses a real risk to their health and development, including weakening of our baby’s immune systems, behaviour, skin health, and much more.

You also can’t depend on slogans and labelling to help you make smart choices. Phrases such as ‘pure’, ‘safe for babies’ or ‘pediatrician recommended’ are fundamentally meaningless words designed to mislead you. Without any regulations, companies are free to get creative with the words and symbols they put on packaging to trick you into thinking their product is pure so you’ll buy it.

If this is news to you then don’t worry, you’re not alone. So what can you do about it?

It can be overwhelming but also empowering to learn more about what ingredients both you and your baby should avoid.

HERE ARE THE MOST COMMON TOXIC INGREDIENTS YOU NEED TO AVOID

Parabens - Parabens are synthetic preservatives. They are associated with ingredient names like methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, and propylparaben. Studies have shown they can disrupt hormonal activity, and they’ve also also been associated with forms of breast cancer, and traces of parabens have even been found in breast tumors.

Ingredients containing the letters eth - such as Polyethylene glycols (also listed as PEG) or Phenoxyethanol as they contain 1,4-dioxane which is a known carcinogen.

Sodium lauryl (ether) sulfate - also labelled as SLS, SLES, sodium dodecyl sulfate or sodium PEG lauryl sulfate. This synthetic ingredient makes shampoo and other products nice and foamy but it can irritate the skin, eyes and lungs and also contains the harmful 1,4-dioxane.

Phthalates are another man-made chemical found in many of our personal care products. Phthalates are used to make plastics flexible and used in many fragrance oils to help prolong the fragrance's scent. A study conducted by the American Academy of Paediatrics concluded that many young infants are frequently exposed to phthalates in common baby lotions, powders, and shampoos thereby making them more vulnerable to the developmental and reproductive adverse effects of these chemicals. Phthalates have been linked to hormonal changes, birth defects, reproductive abnormalities in baby boys (i.e. low sperm count, testicular cancer, deformities of the penis), and damage to the liver, kidneys, and lungs.

So what can you do? Be a conscious ingredient reader! Check the back of each product and see for yourself what it contains. There are wonderful products out there that are free from synthetic chemicals and can be a much better choice for the health of your baby.

Pure, gentle and nourishing ingredients are the essence of every Wotnot product. Our brand ethos is to create products that live up to our claims.

Throughout our over 15 years of creating skin care products Wotnot has managed to remain true to our ingredient philosophy of ‘pure, gentle and nourishing’ and continue to create natural product solutions providing an all-important alternative in the market. Every single ingredient used in their products is listed on the packaging – we don’t have anything to hide!

Wotnot baby products are free of all those parabens, artificial fragrances and other bad boys. Instead they’re packed with nourishing ingredients such as organic pawpaw extract, comfrey oil, and flaxseed oil that are designed to heal, soothe and protect your babies soft skin.

And as you’re coming in contact with your baby’s lotions and creams every day, with Wotnot you can be sure that your skin is being looked after too.

Why it is great to have your own Compost Bin

March 07, 2019

You may be thinking that it's silly to collect all your veggie scraps to make another pile of rubbish at home but having a compost bin can really change your home life and the environment. Food waste is a huge problem in Australia and residents say they would be more enthusiastic about composting wasted food if it was more convenient.

So first of all let's start with how composting works. In the right ratio of 1:2 of browns i.e. dead leaves and greens i.e. grass clippings with the additional kitchen scraps will form together to break down into organic waste, resulting in an amazing fertilizer for your garden. Not only that, but there will be less garbage in your home, more space in your council bin, less wasted food and it reduces toxins and pollution in the air.

If enough Australians start composting it will eventually help manage climate change, water pollution and storm water.

The reasons people are skeptical about composting come from listening to the myths not facts. For example “I don’t want rats in my compost bin”. If your compost bin is built correctly, with gravel and wire, then there should be no entry points for unwelcome visitors. You can also purchase a small in-house compost bins. People might also believe that composts are “smelly” however if you have the right blend of ingredients and keep your bin out of the sun it shouldn’t smell.

Compost bins are very easy to manage and once started require very little up keep.

You can keep your compost for years and it will keep supplying your garden with amazing fertiliser.
