SPF 30 vs SPF 50 – What’s the Difference?

July 31, 2025

SPF 30 vs SPF 50 – What’s the Difference?

SPF 30 vs SPF 50 – What’s the Difference?

When searching for sunscreen, you’ll frequently encounter SPF 30 and SPF 50. But what do these numbers mean? Is SPF 50 truly that much superior? Let’s simplify it so you can select the right protection for your skin.

What Does SPF Really Mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, measuring how effectively a sunscreen shields your skin from UVB rays—the rays responsible for sunburn and contributing to skin cancer.

Here’s the essential information:

  • SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays.
  • SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays.

It’s important to note that SPF 50 does not provide double the protection of SPF 30; it offers only about 1% more in UVB blocking.

So Why Choose SPF 50?

Although the percentage difference may seem minor, SPF 50 provides longer-lasting protection—meaning it takes more time for your skin to begin burning compared to SPF 30, assuming it’s applied correctly and generously.

Think of it like this:

  • SPF 30 – Ideal for everyday use.
  • SPF 50 – Best for extended exposure to the sun

The Most Important Rule?

Reapply. Regardless of the SPF level, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours—or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.

Wotnot Naturals’ Sunscreen Difference

At Wotnot Naturals, our mineral sunscreens uses zinc oxide to form a physical barrier that protects against both UVA (which causes aging) and UVB (which causes burning) rays. They are:

  • Reef-friendly and toxin-free
  • Suitable for sensitive skin and children
  • Broad-spectrum for comprehensive protection

SPF 30 vs 50? Both options are effective—the best choice hinges on your activities for the day. However, the most crucial factor is applying a sufficient amount and reapplying frequently.
